Gerade „At Sea“ besaß innerhalb dieses Konzepts besonderes Gewicht.

___________________________
TARJA always seems to be on tour. Either she rocks the stages of the world with incredible energy or performs Christmas songs in special venues. No matter where she performs or which songs she sings, one thing is certain: packed venues, a fantastic atmosphere, and a singer whose face radiates pure joy.
Some voices are truly unmistakable. TARJAhas one of those voices: classically trained, operatic, and powerful enough to effortlessly hold her own against thundering guitars and a massive metal foundation. On October 12, the Finnish singer brought her “Frisson Live” tour to the Essigfabrik in Cologne. The focus was not only on the past of an exceptional artist but, above all, on looking ahead to her new album “Frisson Noir” and a musical evolution that combines her classical vocal training with an increasingly uncompromising metal sound.
The setlist’s structure already made it clear where the musical journey was heading. Following an intro, the title track “Frisson Noir” opened the evening. Rather than relying exclusively on familiar classics at the outset, TARJA placed her current artistic chapter firmly at the center of the show. “Lost Northern Star” and “Neverlight” offered further facets of her signature sound, before “Serene” and “At Sea” introduced different emotional shades to the set.
“At Sea” was particularly significant within this concept. The song is one of the key tracks on the new album and combines musical power with a cinematic, emotionally charged atmosphere. It perfectly exemplifies TARJA’s ability to create expansive soundscapes without losing sight of human vulnerability.
The setlist was not driven by nostalgia alone. Instead, it created a dynamic arc between new compositions and songs from different stages of her solo career. As a result, the audience was offered not only a retrospective of TARJA’s musical journey but also a glimpse of where she is heading as an artist.
The show featured 20 songs. The selection was varied, drawing on several different albums. Five songs came from the current album “Frisson Noir,” while another five were taken from “My Winter Storm.” Four tracks from “What Lies Beneath” were also included, with the remaining songs providing a well-balanced mix. Four songs were performed in acoustic versions.
Anyone who has attended several of her shows knows that she does not simply repeat memorized speeches between songs. Every show has its own personal words, and you believe every single one of them. You can tell that TARJA loves what she does and is grateful to be able to make a living doing what she loves. TARJAclearly enjoys herself on stage, and she and her loyal fans make a well-rehearsed team. She does not need to encourage the audience to participate; the fans do so entirely on their own. Partly because they love TARJA, and partly because her performance sweeps you up in the moment, leaving you with no choice but to join in.
One of the evening’s most special moments, both as a highlight and as a welcome breather, was the acoustic section. With “Montañas de silencio,” “Calling Grace,” “The Living End,” and “Underneath,” the show shifted to a more intimate level. “Boy and the Ghost” was another emotional highlight before the setlist gradually regained its momentum. These contrasts are an essential part of TARJA’s musical identity: moments of orchestral grandeur and metal intensity give way to passages in which melody and voice take center stage.
There was very little to criticize. The lighting complemented the songs beautifully, and the sound was good as well. As a loyal fan, I make sure to attend at least one show on every tour in Germany. Over the years, I have attended many concerts. After TARJA apparently experienced some vocal difficulties last year, she was back in excellent form this time, and listening to her was an absolute pleasure. As always, TARJAenchanted everyone in the venue, and her smile was contagious.
For 90 minutes, it was possible to forget the world outside and simply enjoy a wonderful experience. It was a concert that moved between orchestral power and intimate, spine-tingling moments. TARJA transformed the Essigfabrik into a setting for dramatic symphonic metal and opened a new chapter in her career with “Frisson Noir.” Once again, she demonstrated just how versatile she is and that she is not afraid to embrace a heavier sound. The mix of songs made the evening perfect.
All that remains is to hope that she continues to enjoy touring as much as she does now and that we will not have to wait too long for the next tour.
